How To Speed-up Windows

1. Speeding up your Windows PC startup time :

You can optimize your computer’s startup speed by launching Run on your Windows computer and typing “msconfig” without the quotes. This will take you to the System Configuration Settings which has five tabs – General, Boot, Services, Startup, and Tools.

Under the General tab, you’ll find 3 startup selections: normal, diagnostic, and selective. During normal startup, all device drivers and services will be loaded by your computer. If this is ticked, it may be the reason why your computer is taking long. Choose either diagnostic or selective startup to speed up the starting time of your Windows computer. Diagnostic startup only loads basic devices and services whereas with selective startup, you can choose to load neither system services nor startup items. After making a selection select “Apply.”

Under the Boot tab, select Advanced options so you can choose the number of processors to facilitate boot speed. If you have a dual-core or quad-core processor, assigning more than one of them to help with the start-up process can significantly boost your computer’s speed. Unfortunately, this optimization tweak is not so efficient on power so if you’re using a laptop, expect some battery drain after startup.

Finally, there’s the Services and Startup tab where you can specifically choose which services and startup items are going to load.

2. Speeding up your Windows Start Menu :

The Start Menu is another serious offender as it often takes time to load. Once again you need to open Run but this time, you will type “regedit.exe” to launch the Registry Editor. Go to theHKEY_CURRENT_USER folder and find Control Panel –> Desktop –> MenuShowDelay. Then, double click MenuShowDelay to edit its value. Type in the numbers on the blank and hit “OK.” Remember, the lower the value the faster the Start Menu will load.

Another trick for speeding up your Windows Start Menu would be to limit the number of shortcuts on your desktop. It could be that you just have too many icons on your desktop and that’s what is causing your computer to take long when loading the Start Menu.

3. Speeding up the Right Click Menu :

Yet another disappointing slow-down that Windows users experience is the time it takes the Menu to show up when hitting the right click. Installing third-party programs that allow you to remove items from the context menu should speed it up.

Dot Net Framework 3.5 Not Installing on Windows 8? Fix it Now!

You may face a common problem while using Windows 8. Microsoft .Net Framework 3.5 is not installed with Windows 8. And several programs may ask you install this. And you can't install this from your PC. It will ask you to connect to the net and use Windows Update.

By default Windows 8 comes with .Net Framework 4.5 and it doesn't include 3.5. When you try to install .Net 3.5 that you previously downloaded from web the you will see the following message.

And you will get the same message while installing some some programs that is developed using .Net 3.5 platform. And you will not able to run those programs on your PC! This is a very bad job by Microsoft. A great trouble for Windows 8 users.

But today you will get the solution. You've install this using command line. I mean you have to use Command Prompt. And surprisingly you Windows 8 DVD includes the .Net Framework 3.5!

Method 1 (Offline Installation using cmd):
  1. Enter your Windows 8 Installation Disk on DVD Drive.
  2. Now run Command Prompt as Administrator. (Hint: Start > Type cmd > Now right click on Command Prompt and hit on Run as Administrator from the bottom)
  3. Now copy the following command and paste it in the command prompt window. Or type the following line in command prompt. Press Enter (To paste the command in command prompt, click the right button of mouse and select paste)
  4. Now .Net Framework will be installed within few minutes.
DISM /Online /Enable-Feature /FeatureName:NetFx3 /All /LimitAccess /Source:h:\sources\sxs

Remember: h is the drive letter of DVD drive. Change it with your DVD drive letter.

Method 2 (Online Method using Windows Update):

If you follow all the instructions of method 1 you will be able to install .net 3.5 properly. But if there is any problem for example- you don't have DVD drive, or your Windows DVD doesn't contain it then you can install it directly from Windows Update option. More or less you've to download 200 MB data from internet.

Follow the instruction below:

Control Panel > Programs and Features > Turn Windows Features on or off > Mark the option .NET Framework 3.5 (includes .NET 2.0 and 3.0) > OK.
Now you will see a window like the image above. Hit on Install This Feature. And make sure you're connected to the net. That's it.

Secret Tips: If you upgrade to Windows 8 from Windows 7, then you get .Net Framework 3.5 automatically enabled !!

Installing a Windows language pack on Windows 8 before installing the .NET Framework 3.5 will cause the .NET Framework 3.5 installation to fail. Install the .NET Framework 3.5 before installing any Windows language packs.

Get System Information by Simple CMD Command: Systeminfo !!

Desktop PC with LCD Monitor, Keyboard, Mouse and Speaker

There are many ways to view your system information. But each of these ways has some advantages and disadvantages. You can't get information about all issues from a system. As a result you should know different ways to view your PC information. In this site two posts have already been published about viewing system information.

  1. DirectX Diagnostic Tool: Press Start + R > Type dxdiag > Press Enter > Get Details of your system.
  2. Speccy: A third party tool to view system information. It shows both hardware and software information. Also great for measuring the system temperature.

Another popular way to get the system information is System Properties. You can get this by clicking right to the My Computer Icon and then choose Properties. Keyboard shortcut to view System Properties is Start + Pause. But it shows only minimum information. Just Processor, RAM and System type (32 or 64 bit).

If you would like to get details about your system you must use either Dxdiag or Speccy. But today I'm gonna share something else with you! Yes, you can do it by a simple command. Let's start-

  1. Press Start + R to open Run.
  2. Type cmd to run Command Prompt.
  3. Type systeminfo hit enter and wait for 2/3 seconds
  4. Now you get the details!

Systeminfo will show the following information:

  • OS Name, Version, Manufacturer, Configuration and Build Type
  • Name of the Registered Owner and Organization
  • Product ID
  • Windows Installation Date
  • System Boot Time
  • System Manufacturer, System Model and System Type
  • Processor and its Capacity
  • BIOS Name with Version
  • Windows Installation Directory
  • System Language and Keyboard Input Method
  • Time Zone (Selected GMT Time Zone)
  • Total Physical Memory/ RAM
  • Virtual Memory: Maximum, Available, In Use
  • Others: Page File Location, Domain, Logon Server, Hotfix, Network Card etc.

Have a look at the image below to get a clear idea

System Information on Command Prompt Window

Actually, a single way to do something is not enough for a person. Every system has some exclusive advantages. So you need to know all possible ways to do any task. That's why I've presented this command to you even after there are 3 other ways to view system information.

How to Enable Delete Confirmation Dialog in Windows 8

Most of the Window 8 UI elements like “low battery On Screen notification”, “full screen apps”, and auto run dialog box” have been renovated because of the flourished Metro bases panels, Ribbon Explorer and Start Menu. In dialogue box the most significant change is with the copy/move conflict resolution dialog box. It seems very elegant and spontaneous and it can also be handled easily from a single Window. One more noticeable change in Windows 8 is that it no longer asks for the confirmation while deleting a file or folder. It simple means that when you hit the delete button after selection some file then it automatically sends it to the Recycle Bin without any confirmation.
